The orchard has approximately 20,000 haskap plants and 5,000 cherry bushes. They were planted in 2018 and 2019. Both fruits have varieties that are suited to our northern climate and are cross-pollinating plants. A local honey producer has set up hives beside the field to ensure even pollination.
It is estimated that the existing plants can produce berries for 30 to 40 years. The field is equipped with a technology driven drip-irrigation system. An electric fence around the perimeter of the field protects the plants from small and large predators. You’ll also see and hear bird control devices.
Rows 1 & 2
The first two rows are varieties that were planted in 2015 to conduct research and development. These are Indigo Gem and Aurora varieties. Depending on an early or late spring, they are the first to flower and the fruit are ready between July 1 and July 30.
Rows 2 to 32
The cherry varieties are: Juliette, Valentine and Cupid. They take from 3 to 4 years to yield fruit. We are waiting patiently!
Rows 33 to 109
These are all haskap plants and they are the newest varieties: Beauty, Beast and Blizzard. They flower a little later in the spring and the fruit are ready to harvest in July and August. These varieties are bigger, tastier, sweeter and stand up straighter. They bear fruit in the first season and will reach maturity in about 10 years.
